The interesting thing about this movie was that it was adapted from a book written in 1938 by a woman who was a soft of feminist. She wrote about things that were going on at the time that people didn't really talk about. It was slightly scandalous when the book came out.

I can understand why but then I think at that time period (and all times leading up to it), women had very limited ways of supporting themselves or getting ahead. So maybe having three boyfriends and maneuvering for a career seems bad/awful/degrading/scandalous/etc. it's been one of the ways, throughout history, that women have chosen to get where they needed to go when traditions dictated otherwise.

I was excited when I went to see this movie. Unfortunately (having known nothing about the plot, beforehand), I was disappointed in the morality central to the movie. I love a period film. The set, itself, was luscious, but it couldn't overhaul the rest of it for me.
