Magnetic Chalkboard Wall

One of the things I love about my flat, despite in being a small one-bedroom, is that there is a good-size hallway and entrance inside. I love having this space to separate the public living areas with the private bedroom in the back.

It’s very narrow, however, so a lot of things – like furniture – just won’t fit but since it’s the first thing when you come in something has got to be here. Currently there’s just three pieces of artwork hanging and one ginourmous floor to ceiling framed Pottery Barn mirror. It’s kind of generic, not-fun and definitely doesn’t reflect set the tone for coming into my home.

I’ve been wanting to use chalkboard paint on the wall ever since I it done at the amazing Front Hotel in Copenhagen (pictured above) where guests (including myself!) left notes and drawings. And then when I saw another great example but with magnetic primer, I was smitten with the idea.

For one wall in my little entrance (where the arrows are pointing in the photos below), I am thinking of giving it a go. This way I can have an easy art-gallery by using magnets to hang up lots of art instead of expensive frames (no more leveling!) and friends can leave colourful notes and doodles. I think it’s a great art statement, fun and practical without being pretentious! Perfect!

I am a little nervous about a huge black wall feeling over-powering or making the area really dark. I’m also concerned about finding a good magnetic primer or paint as it seems like a lot of them require 6 coats and even then have challenges with magnetizing (Rustoleoms is said to have very poor magnetization even after 6 coats) or primers having a rough texture.

Other concerns include being able to easily paint it white before I move out since I’m a renter and easily cleaning the walls without chalkboard residue sticking, finding a good low VOC chalkboard paint (although I think Benjamin Moore’s Chalkboard Paint can be made low VOC).

Apartment Therapy has a good thread on this where others talk about the same concerns but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of answers in there yet so it’s more Googling for me unless anyone has any ideas, suggestions or feedback (always appreciated!).

Pennsylvania

New Baltimore Covered Bridge, by PAadventure.

If anyone has any stories, favourite places, or lives in Pennsylvania, please share them with me. I’ve thought and thought about this place for so long that I need to take a trip there. I especially want to see the mountains, nature, learn the history and also to see Terrain. Seasons wouldn’t be so bad, either.

Gear Shmear.

The Great Glacier, Selkirk Mountains, BC, about 1890, originally uploaded by Musée McCord Museum.

About 1992 I stood in this same spot with not really any more tools; I had ice picker shoes and a backpack but my guide and I were pretty basic which was good. Had I had to have had all the “proper” ice climbing/walking gear, I most likely would have missed out on doing something amazing because at 18, I had no desire (or money) to get into something that was really just a passing fancy (I can’t imagine what I’d do with ice picks now!).

I’ve been thinking a lot about gear since the Danes Just Bike post. I’ve done a lot of activities in my life, some mundane, some extraordinary, but the reason why I was able to do so many things was because I simply wanted to do them. I didn’t stop to think if I was a biker, a hiker, a climber, a flier, a dancer, a traveler and I didn’t stock up at a store to outfit myself accordingly.  I simply did.

In most of the countries I’ve lived, this idea is pretty normal. I don’t really know many people who bike (except for racers) who have a biking outfit – it’s generally just regular clothes. There’s very few activities that you doll up different for, including day hikes and light sports. Granted, when I hiked through New Zealand or did the West Coast Trail, I had fantastic hiking boots, backpack and lightweight camping gear but I was even then, pretty basic (and had the most amazing time!).

A few months ago I was hiking in Malibu with my dog and came across two women who, frankly, just made fun of me for what I was wearing: A dress, a sweater, and normal shoes. But I failed to see what was so wrong with that because I hadn’t intended to hike that day but, once I saw the spot, wanted to go out into it. My shoes are comfortable and slightly orthopedic in nature (offering more support than most sneakers), my linen dress was light and breathable as was my sweater. There wasn’t mud, there wasn’t rocks to climb, so why was it strange for me to be out there dressed like that? Why should I have rushed home, changed into shorts, a t-shirt, and hiking boots just to do a mile out in the open?

Sometimes I feel that living here, life is often put into separate compartments; you have your work persona, your home persona, work clothes, home clothes, out at night clothes, day makeup, night makeup, bike clothes, your dreams, your reality, your secret loves, what you really do and so forth.  I sometimes feel like this sets us up to feel disconnected and to miss out on a lot of things because we don’t have the right gear, right outfit, right whatever.

But what if we realised we had the capabilities to do everything right now – would we?

Prep for the Quake
I’m participating. I was in the Seattle Earthquake a few years ago and my building, across from the Starbucks that tumbled, went dark and all our manufacturing equipment, ladders, and desks fell whilst the floors went up and down. Scary and I had no idea what to do. Living so close to a major fault line now in LA, I’m changing that.
